The Oak RidgerHad Five US Patents
Solomon D. Labinov passed away Monday, June 22, 2009.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nata M. Labinova; and son, Mark Labinov.
Dr. Labinov attended Kiev Polytechnical Institute in, Kiev, Ukraine,
1954, and received his PhD in 1966. Some of his career highlights
include: work at the Kiev Polytechnical Institute under contract with
Oleg Antonov and the Antonov (aircraft) Design Bureau in Kiev.
He founded the Thermodynamics Center in Kiev in 1969, first under the
All Union Science and Research Institute of Oil and Chemistry, and then
chartered by the Soviet Department of Oil and Gas Processing as an
independent institute, where Dr. Labinov served as director. The
Institute was an internationally recognized authority on chemical
standards and worked closely with standards bureaus worldwide,
including the U. S. National Institute of Standards and Technology. He
was a member of The Committee on Data for Science and Technology
(CODATA); Led the CODATA group on Properties of Gas and Liquids.
He was invited to Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 1992 for work on
advanced combustion processes to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide, and
retired from ORNL in 2007, holding five U.S. patents. Dr. Labinov led
or contributed to many advanced combustion and engine projects,
including microturbines, thermochemical engines, and solid state
combustion of metals.
All people who worked with Dr. Labinov, worldwide, always recognized his leadership and loved and respected him.
