The services for Ted Kennedy are in progress. A lowly senator, his casket was carried by six enlisted men, with an officer walking slowly behind. I couldn't help seeing again and again the un-draped caskets being off-loaded from airplanes by airport personnel, returning from Iraq. And thinking, if there had been just one nationally televised service for one IVAW member returned from Iraq in semi-secrecy, how many soldiers' lives might have been saved. And now, those un-draped caskets are returning from AfPak.

All issues in American politics eventually become questions of personalities. Today the Establishment's oldest remaining scion, a true liberal, is buried amid hosannas. (Forget the Catholic angle; the rest of America has.) After a small flap, buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Continued at 10:40 AM PDT. The church has let out and a jet will carry Ted from Massachusetts to Washington, DC. To stop at Congress on the way to the Cemetery. Interment should be around 4 PM Eastern time?

There is hope of course. And all of us who voted for Obama don't need to be told this fact. But most of us are saying, there's still hope.

How American to find hope in a funeral and very little else.
