“Do you know the story of the first Thanksgiving?” my 6-year-old asked as we drove to my parents’ house for the holiday.“Yes,” I said. I tend to answer questions literally.
“Why don’t you tell it to us,” his mother suggested.
So he did:
“A long time ago, these people lived in England, and they didn’t like the King. He was mean and he wanted them to pay money. So - they left England on this big ship and they were the Pilgrims. It was a hard trip because it was winter and many people died. They were the first people in America. Then they taught the Indians to plant crops…”
“The Indians?” my wife interrupted, “Where did they come from? I thought you said the Pilgrims were the first people in America?”
“Yes…they were the first people in America. Hmmm. The Indians? The Indians came later, a month later, on a ship. From England.”
“Really?”
“Yes. And the Pilgrims taught them how to plant crops…”
“The Pilgrims taught the Indians how to plant the crops?”
“Yes. And the Indians were thankful for the crops and the Pilgrims were thankful that they survived. So they had a big celebration together. That’s the story of Thanksgiving.”
