The battle for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party was won by liberals over the DLC!

::::::::

The Clintons represented the DLC, which WAS the Republican arm of the Democratic party.

Under the Clintons first tenure:

we lost 48 seats in the House, 8 seats in the Senate, and 11 Govenorships.

we also lost 1254 State Legislative seats (as of 1998) as the GOP took over 9 State Legislatures.

439 Democrats became Republicans, while only 3 Republicans became Democrats.

and in 1990, Democrats held a 1542 seat lead in state bodies, but by 1998, that lead had shrunk to 288.

finally, in 1992, the Democrats controlled 17 more state legislatures than Republicans. After 1998, the Republicans controlled one more than the Democrats.

Just to put things into perspective, and to demonstrate just how far the political sprectrum has drifted to the right, look at Nixon. A Republican right? Conservative? Not by today's standards. Nixon established the EPA, OSHA and the Endangered Species Act. He emposed wage and price controls and was outspoken in favor of Affirmative Action. He even included education in his drug policy. Nixon would not even qualify as a Democrat today.

The DLC, like the GOP, represents inherited wealth and Wall Street. I'd like to think that the DLC is dead, but I'm afraid that it will still have some influence on the Party.

houston liberal, professional, self employed, believe that liberal means social justice, economic fairness, and human rights trump economic concerns.
