So I have learned that my employer is *really* going to terminate me - for being temporarily disabled due to back surgery. Can you say, "litigation?"
But the point is that the health insurance mess is not the only part of the picture - the fact that they are able to just hang you up and leave you to dry without regard whatsoever to your lost income is mind-boggling to me. The entire damn system needs to be reformed, so that nobody has to live in the god damned streets.
Fortunately, I live in California, where there is a mandatory short-term disability policy supported through payroll tax. That will keep me alive until the end of September. After that, I will become dependent on SSDI, which will be about 30% of my prior take home pay. I will be completely bankrupt, and unable to support myself. California's short-term policy works really well - why not make it a national model? Or is that too socialist for you righties and fundies? But the long-term model, which is part of Social Security, is not even remotely sufficient enough to be considered a benefit at all. Why do we settle for this? It is time to REVOLT.
