America: What it was, what it is now, and what we can expect as its future.

The story of America was always imperfectly told.  Always too much of the glories and an insufficiency of the truth, the dark undersides of such aspects as racial discrimination, the true power of the rich, and our "patriotic" support of war as the preferred means to advance the national -- essentially economic -- agenda, and even something that can be described little better than a surfeit of naiveté or wrong-headedness. But there was usually an active Political Opposition, always some "unmanageable" Critical Press, and there was Hope.   Today's rare insightful and truthful observer who possesses the modicum of courage must admit that there is little evidence of any of these today. Where does this leave our America?  Perhaps ultimately doomed to a fate dictated by a confederacy of the decent governments of the world who will demand -- by whatever powerful and destructive means -- an end to our current madness and ascending treachery. Or perhaps -- finally -- the American people will grasp the reality of their terrible circumstance and take the action long overdue to make the necessary changes within our own borders.  There are currently, however, scant signs of any promise in such a direction, but as a matter of fact any who suggest such a course are dismissed as lunatics, branded as traitors, or more popularly scorned as miscreants who do not Support Our Troops. Thomas Jefferson had it aright:  "I fear for my country when I reflect that God is just." And so may we all.............Rafe Pilgrim
