Two areas of policy defined the wrong-headedness of the Bush administration. One was its persistent denial of the reality of global warming. The other was its persistent denial of the reality of human sexuality. Thankfully, some measure of sanity is returning to public policy.
First, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has indicated that it is prepared to declare that greenhouse gases are pollutants that endanger the public's health and welfare. This would give the green light to proposals that would regulate the emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and other heat-trapping gases that are strongly linked to global warming, beginning with automobiles and moving on to power plants and oil refineries.
The other big development today was a ruling by U.S. District Judge Edward Korman that assailed FDA for its refusal to allow teenagers to have access to the morning after pill without a prescription. Citing political interference from the Bush administration, Judge Kramer ordered FDA to allow 17 year olds to have access to the so-called Plan B morning-after pill.
Which just goes to prove that Bush was right when he said: "There's an old saying in Tennessee--I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee--that says, fool me once, shame onshame on you. Fool me--you can't get fooled again."
