The Promise Of The Ghost DanceThe Promise of the Ghost Dance is this: One day the White Man's time will come to an end and the tribal peoples of the Earth will be returned to their rightful place in the bosom of the Mother.
In 1890 many saw belief in this promise and the practice of the dance as the wishful fantasy and foolish act of a desperate people. The US government saw it as a dangerous idea and attempted to put an end to it and the practice of the dance at Wounded Knee.
The Promise of the Ghost Dance still lives on in the hearts of many people and the White Man still tries to stifle it whenever he sees it. But the Promise of the Ghost Dance is not just a fantasy or a dangerous idea, and the message of the Ghost Dance is more than a promise. It's a prophesy -- a prophesy of what may well come to pass.
The White Man's world will be removed from the breast of the Mother and the tribal peoples of the entire world will resume living in the Old Ways.
Among the ruins of the White Man's world, the new children of the Earth will remember and recover their birthright as if it had never been lost. And the Earth will keep turning for many centuries to come.
The whole of the White Man's time will someday be looked at as an aberration -- a time when folly ruled humankind; a time when Man had lost touch with his true place in the world; a time when Man behaved like a mad, drunken monkey and nearly destroyed his own Mother.
This future may occur because, ultimately, the Mother is merciful and her bounty is endless.
This future will occur for all those who are people of the tribe that resides in the Heart; the tribe that is made up of all colors -- from black to white and everything in between.
The Mother never forgets her children. And her children, though they often forget, always remember her in times of darkness and despair.
Humankind is in one of those times now; and now is the time to remember; for this could be the last time...
Oh Mother
Hear me
Your lost son!
I have wandered far
And done many
Bad things!
I have shamed myself
Before your world!
I have used
And misused
Your bounty!
I have wounded you
In a careless way!
I have turned
Your blessings
Into curses!
I have done all I could
To break your heart!
Oh Mother!
Is that your call I hear?
Do you still love your son?
Can I come home now?
I will come home now
