President George W. Bush gives new meaning to being "out for a spin," especially when he's careening along rain-slick pavement on the presidential bicycle. White House propaganda chief Scott McClellan said Bush was going at "a pretty high speed" on Wednesday when he collided with a policeman guarding the Gleneagles golf resort where the Group of Eight (G8) Summit is being held.

::::::::

After skidding to a stop on the pavement, Bush was treated for scrapes on his hands and arms. The presidential bicycle "suffered" damage so severe from hitting the policeman that Bush was forced to return to the hotel in a Secret Service car which had been trailing him.

The policeman, according to McClellan, had a "possible" ankle injury -- so minor it's scarcely worth mentioning. The officer remains in the hospital.

I hate to keep pointing out the obvious but -- after falling off a couch and banging up his face while trying to eat a pretzel three years ago...after tumbling inelegantly off a Segway in Kennebunkport, Maine, two years ago...after soaring over the handlebars of his mountain bike and landing on his face when vacationing at his Crawdad ranch last year -- it would seem the solution to keeping the president, as well as those with whom he comes in contact, out of harm's way would be to equip both him and the presidential bicycle with training wheels.
