Writing is both craft and art. Perhaps the toughest writing is that of the OpEd Piece. The writer wants to convince his reader that what he says is important, and correct. Easy to do when, "Preaching to the choir." Instead, you are seeking to change the thinking of those opposed to your views, that's something else, entirely. You have two chances to change the opinion of opponents Slim and None! If you can't get the basics correct in every respect, then, don't waste your time. Mistakes give your opponents a reason to dismiss you as being ignorant, sloppy, or lacking commitment to your work. Once those hurdles are conquered the familiar directive, telling you that, "the devil is in the details," holds more than casual significance. When you are successful, few readers will be able to describe what they liked about your work. They just somehow recognize it as the work of the true wordsmith. Sentence length, average number of syllables, limited use of, "rare words," and emotional content, all affects response to your work. Still, why this piece as a diary? The formatting allowed by OEN is highly restricted. If all above represents construction, then formatting, color and other controls are the "interior design of the structure. Diaries make this control possible, while article formatting does not.
