At the time of his arrest what law was broken?

The news of the day is the arrest of Illinois Governor Blagojevich on several charges of........... Mmmmm, just what wrong doing was committed? He did state he wanted to gain from naming the next Senator, but since when is wanting something against the law? Now I am not saying what his intentions were was ethical, but those intentions had not been carried out, therefore what law was broken? What actions are taken when politicians take “goodies” for their vote? These aren't intention, they are illegal at the time the “goodies” are received and the vote is made. We only do that in a few instances. Sometimes the “goodies” may simply be one's safety. For example, prior to the vote on giving Bush authority to illegally invade Iraq Vice President Cheney went to Paul Wellstone and told him that if he did not vote in favor there could be serious consequences for him and/or the State of Minnesota (Wellstone told of this conversation to a group of VFW members during his Senatorial re-election campaign). The rest is history. Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

Wouldn't it have been wiser to simply let him carry out his plan, then, when a law was broken arrest him? The only problem with waiting would have been had they done so there may have been damage to the Bank of America as he stated he would order the State of Illinois to stop doing business with them in retaliation to the bank's refusal to loan money to the Republic Window Company, thus forcing that company to close its doors. History has shown that those who mess with the banks have done so at their own peril. Andrew Jackson did and he became the first sitting president to have an assassination attempt against him. Abe Lincoln did and we know what happened to him. John F Kennedy did and he met the same end at Lincoln. Blagojevich messed with a bank. Fortunately, no assassination attempt was made, but a premature arrest was.

Another thing about this sordid affair is how nonchalantly it is thrown around how his phone was tapped and his office was bugged. Is this what our country has come to? It would be interesting to see what warrants were given to enable this monitoring of his behavior. It seems to me quite depressing to think our corporate media propagandists take joy in broadcasting how our citizens are readily monitored.

So, I see much more wrong with the present scenario than simply the Governor's intentions. We have a lot of fixing to do as our nation is rapidly becoming unrecognizable as the Democracy it has been known for.
