DIANE'S NEWS CLIPS begins here :)~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~> The Guardian OFFICER IN BUSH MOTORCADE ACCIDENT DIES Monday November 27, 2006 http://www.guardian.co.uk/worldlatest/story/0,,-6241171,00.html?gusrc=ticker-103704 _________________________________ Excerpted from: http://www.tpmcafe.com STRAIGHT TALK ABOUT "STRAIGHT TALK" By Todd Gitlin Congratulations to the LAT's Matt Welch for this morning's penetrating column on John McCain. No, it's not exactly pioneering to write about the ever camera-ready Arizonan now saddling up to gallop in from the West to rescue the rotten hulk of the Republican Party. But Welch has the audacity to write about...McCain's views! Imagine, the Senator has notions about the country! He's not just a straight shooter with an adorable face! Welch writes rightly: "You can read 1,000 profiles of GOP presidential front-runner John McCain without encountering a single paragraph examining his core ideological philosophy.... " It flies in the face of mainstream horse-race and handicapping stories, but McCain is not just a rugged man in a white bus. He's carrying baggage. Sifting through McCain's four bestselling books and nearly three decades of work on Capitol Hill, a distinct approach toward governance begins to emerge. And it's one that the electorate ought to be particularly worried about right now. McCain, it turns out, wants to restore your faith in the U.S. government by any means necessary, even if that requires thousands of more military deaths, national service for civilians and federal micromanaging of innumerable private transactions. He'll kick down the doors of boardroom and bedroom, mixing Democrats' nanny-state regulations with the GOP's red-meat paternalism in a dangerous brew of government activism. .....................snip..................... McCain is more inclined to start wars and increase troop levels than George W. Bush or Bill Clinton. He has supported every U.S. military intervention of the last two decades, urged both presidents to rattle their sabers louder over North Korea and Iran, lamented the Pentagon's failure to intervene in Darfur and Rwanda and supported a general policy of "rogue state rollback." He's a fan of Roosevelt's Monroe-Doctrine-on-steroids stick-wielding in Latin America. And - like Bush - he thinks too much multilateralism can screw up a perfectly good war. ........................................................................[snip] http://www.tpmcafe.com/blog/coffeehouse/2006/nov/26/straight_talk_about_straight_talk _________________________________ A Must Watch VIDEO: Bill Maher - Richard Dreyfuss 10:26 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4GLrFkfVS4&eurl= _________________________________ Excerpted from: http://www.capitolhillblue.com/ IRAQI LEADERS ISSUE JOINT PLEAS FOR END TO VIOLENCE By THOMAS WAGNER Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish leaders called on Sunday for an end to Iraq's sectarian conflict and vowed to track down those responsible for the war's deadliest attack. http://www.capitolhillblue.com/news2/2006/11/iraqi_leaders_i.html _________________________________ THE RAW STORY Lott Attacks Rove, Says 'I've Had Problems With Some Of His Conduct' ROVE ON THE ROCKS? That's a rhetorical question since we know the answer. Would the writer, a pimp for the Israeli high tech industry, describe Israel's war on Gaza or its massive destruction of whole areas of Lebanon as "elegant," as well? Someone has noticed what is going on in the Middle East. The UK Telegraph reports that Britain is "furious" with Israel because of the damage it is causing in Gaza. Is it because of the wholesale slaughter of innocent Palestinians -- the bombing of a Gaza beach that turned the entire family of 12-year-old Huda Ghalia into a smoking pile of human flesh and scattered body parts? No? Then, perhaps it is using innocent Palestinians as human shields, gunning down children as they scurry fearfully to school, burying the wounded alive Jenin-style . . . http://onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_1460.shtml _________________________________ IF LINK DOESN'T WORK, THEN PASTE ARTICLE LINK(S) INTO YOUR BROWSER -- OR GO DIRECTLY TO >> http://www.truthout.org FOCUS | Rumsfeld Approved of Torture Says Former US General http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/112606Y.shtml Outgoing defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorized the mistreatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib, the prison's former US commander said in an interview on Saturday. ----- FOCUS | Big Energy Firms Crimping Oil Supplies http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/112606X.shtml An Associated Press analysis suggests that big oil companies have been crimping supplies in subtler ways across the country for years. The analysis, based on data from the US Energy Information Administration, indicates that the industry slacked off supplying oil and gasoline during the prolonged price boom between early 1999 and last summer, when prices began to fall. ----- Sunni Leader: Iraq Violence May Spread Through Middle East http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/112606A.shtml ----- Maureen Dowd | No One to Lose To http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/112606F.shtml "After the Thanksgiving Day Massacre of Shiites by Sunnis, President Bush should go on Rupert Murdoch's Fox News and give an interview headlined: 'If I did it, here's how the civil war in Iraq happened'," says Maureen Dowd. "He could describe, hypothetically, a series of naïve, arrogant and self-defeating blunders, including his team's failure to comprehend that in the Arab world, revenge and religious zealotry can be stronger compulsions than democracy and prosperity." ----- Israel and Palestinians Reach Agreement on Cease-Fire http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/112606C.shtml ----- Arlen Parsa | Wartime Sacrifices http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/112606D.shtml Arlen Parsa writes: "Never before in American history has such a costly war been fought with so little immediate sacrifice asked of all Americans. Less than one year into his first term, President Bush made clear the terms of his war: every other country was either with us, or against us... and that America is once again a participant in a grand 'struggle for civilization.' A Milwaukee company is marketing a new genetically engineered yeast to red wine vintners. The yeast was engineered to eliminate headache-causing chemicals produced by bacteria commonly used in making red wines. According to a Sacramento Bee article, wine produced using the new yeast is being sold in the United States this year. But using engineered organisms without labeling the bottles creates a different kind of headache for consumers who want to avoid bioengineered products. Moreover, following its typical approach, the FDA is allowing the yeast to be marketed based on the company's safety review-not an independent FDA assessment. The software is used for wireless networking cards. Major manufacturers such as Dell and Hewlett-Packard use the hardware. The flaw could affect millions of machines. A hacker could create a long SSID (service set identifier) that could trigger the vulnerability. Users don't need to be connected to a wireless network to be affected. The flaw cannot be triggered via the Internet. To find out if your machine is affected, search for the following file: BCMWL5.SYS. If it is present on your system, you should disable wireless networking until a patch is issued. Be sure to listen to me Monday through Friday.
