A look at the Supreme Court and why voting for President in November is so important.

::::::::

The Supreme Court, amazingly, decided torestore the right of habeas corpus to the Guantanamo prisoners. Considering the make-up of the court, I find this surprising.

Close Guantanamo? What a refreshingly humane idea! I work in the Habeas Corpus Unit of the Office of the Cief Public Defender of the state of Connecticut. I KNOW how important it is that prisoners be able to challenge their custody in court. Sure, we get a number of specious, false claims, and habeas cases are notoriously hard to win. But for every 99 that get shot down, rightfully or not, that 100th case that frees an innocent person from prison is worth all time, paperwork and money it costs for the other 99. I applaud the Supreme Court for poking this miserable administration in the eye and allowing Guantanamo prisoners to right to confront their jailers in court.

Justice Kennedy, an independent-minded man who usually tends toward the conservative side of issues, broke the tie and provoked angry dissent from Justices Roberts & Scalia - now that's not suprising!

I am unhappy with both presumptive presidential candidates. Neither McCain't nor NoBama have the experience, insight and connection with the real world of we the people to govern effectively.

However, having said that, I will vote for Obama in November, and and your vote is extremely important too, even if it means choosing between the lesser of two evils. We cannot afford any more right-wing zealots on the bench of our country's highest court.
