Like never before the vice presidential running mates are going to play a much larger role in this present presidential election than in past elections in my opinion. In the past vice-presidential picks have been selected for geographical reasons or for military / foreign policy experience.
The democrats have long discussed the need to attract southern voters and have choosen VP's that have strong ties to southern voters, unless of course the Presidential candidate is himself a southerner like Jimmy Carter.
This year because of so many historical firsts that have led to the polarizaion of specific demographic segments the VP selection will be especially strategic. Will Barack select a southerner like Edwards (from North Carolina) or Jim Webb from Virigina who also has extensive foregin policy and military experience. Will Barack select Hillary to help with his deficiencies in the women voter bloc and older voters? Or will Barack select someone like Bill Richardson to help with hispanic voters and win additional support in the west?
What would happen if Barack selects someone like Jim Webb from Virginia and then McCain picks a female running mate with perceived economic experience like Carly Fiorina?
This will be a fascinating chess match in my opinion.
Feel free to post the top VP prospects for either Obama or McCain.
