It would have ended in less than 2 weeks. If we had elected Ron Paul, the Iraq war would be an event described in past tense. Last month, Barack Obama asked for an increase by 20,000 troops into Afghanistan, followed by a request yesterday for another $84 Billion in funding for the Iraq/ Afghan wars. This is a signal to indicate the end? Ron Paul promised that upon his election on Jan. 20 -inauguration day- he would have signed an executive order citing all troops be withdrawn from both wars within 90 days, which would have been April 20, 2009- next monday. The war would indeed be over.
Instead, we voted in Obama. We couldn't bear to "waste our vote" and stand against the status quo. What have we gained? Record deficits? Countless flip flops on campaign promises to end Bush policies (illegal wiretapping, anyone?) We can disagree on Ron Paul's tax policies, his stance on abortion, or his quest to end social programs and remove the taxes that fund them, and we can argue about those issues later- the fact is that less Iraqi civilians would be dead and more American soldiers alive had he been elected. Say it over and over. Relish in it. The war could be over- right now; had I not thrown my vote away on Barack Obama.
I hope you are happy- if you voted for Obama or Mccain, you are personally responsibly for these wars continuing. You may disagree, but your vote enabled a man to take power who has asked for an increase in defense spending- 9% higher than even George Bush's most extravagent request. When you see more news about the death and destruction taking place, know that your vote enabled it.
If you voted for John McCain, you voted for the war.
If you voted for Barack Obama, you voted for the war.
