The leaks about the status of CIA agent Valerie Plame have the potential to further erode the house that Bush built, one more gaping hole that allows us to look into the secrecy that hides the ineptitude, sinister and Machiavellian Bush Administration. The Republicans on the committee investigating the Plame leaks are trying to cast Plame as a Democrat who may have had political motives, and the White House operatives who perpetrated the leak as innocents who did not know her covert status and thus are not liable. Virginia Representative Tom Davis (R) tried desperately to preempt the civil suit she and her husband have filed by asking Plame about her career. He emphasized the fact that Plame still works for the CIA, though in a different overt capacity, and apparently has no commensurate pay reduction. How that will affect the lawsuit is entirely unclear but it again serves to undermine Plame/Wilson, making her appear to be aggrandizing the damages done for political and/or financial gain. This type of character assassination, though carried out more gently than others in this case, is still just that – a cheap shot at impugning the victim and the witness.
