Tonight, I'll have Paul Hetznecker, veteran civil rights defense attorney on my show. He's defended hundreds of the people who were arrested in philly at the 2000 GOP convention, defended PETA activists, anti-death penalty activists. And he has a lot of thoughts on constitutional rights, freedom of the press, the right to protest, police abuse. This is going to be a great interview. Two separate people contacted the ACLU, asking for their help with Cheryl's case. When I spoke to the ACLU attorney and told her that Paul Hetznecker was on the case, she commented that he would have been her first choice. After hearing him prep his clients, I can see why. He's sharp, smart and savvy and deeply believes in defending our constitutional rights, particularly those involved in protest.
At the town hall in Philly, which I helped to organize last Saturday, I brought up the idea that Dennis Kucinich has characterized health care as a civil right. I suggested that we know what it took to achieve civil rights-- that Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks and congressman John Lewis used-- civil disobedience. That's right-- civil disobedience to acheive single payer health care. Hey, the newest study puts deaths per year do to not having health insurance at over 45,000. That doesn't even include the underinsured and those who have been bullied by the health insurers not to access diagnostic and treatment services or prescribed drugs. At the town hall, I met a woman whose son died because he didn't have the money to get the prescription he'd had written for him filled.
Lots to talk about. Don't miss it.
