While doing some research I found this article, "Venezuela's 2002 Coup Revisited: The Evidence Two Years On". Based on what I've read and been told it would seem to give an objective account of the events of mid April 2002.
While there is plenty to criticize about the opposition's handling of the situation, most especially Carmona's actions, there's still no excuse for what Chavez did and tried to do either. It's obvious that he wanted a violent confrontation with the opposition at Miraflores doorstep. His placing of civilian armed thugs in the opposition demonstration's way, right at the presidential palace, was inexcusable. As was his attempt to activate Plan Avila.
