The world would not be the same without King or Ali but I totally loved such non-liberals as Bob Hope and still quote him today. When told he was the most handsome man in the world, he said that he disagreed, but admired honesty. John Wayne was, for me, easily believable as Genghis Khan and that was me humiliating Tonto in "The Lone Ranger ".My brother says he always supported the Indians but not me. I cheered as they bit the Native American dust. These were not individuals with families, expectations and fears, they were a mass of deserving-to-die-whoopers. They harassed God-fearing covered wagons that adopted that kid with the lame leg, who would probably not make it to the end of the picture.
I struggled with any issue that had balance. I wanted my good guys very good, not like Ethan in "The Searchers ", who just might have killed Natalie Wood, who had "gone native ". The first bad guy I liked was Richard Boone in "Hombre ". "Hombre, ( Boone smiles) ..you put two holes in me ", but I was older then. Before that, I could watch entire dark skinned races being mown down by 3 white Alamo dwellers.
Like all proper kids I wept when Old Yeller died. A cowboy gives the boy the dog in return for a home-cooked-meal from the boy 's mother. The cowboy was so handsome..she so pretty ....no ...just the "best darn-home-cooked meal I ever tasted, Ma 'am. " Adopted-lame-kid 's foster-mothers only cooked and sewed then.
The best film to talk about is "It 's a Wonderful Life ". Every one has this in their top ten. They all think this a film about a man whose value is pointed out by an angel. No, this is a "sleeper " film about a socialist attempting to make homes for people, at no profit to himself. This film is so radical it would not be made today. Thanks, Comrade Stewart.
