If Democratic superdelegates have any integrity they must recuse themselves from voting for ANYTHING at the Democratic National Convention, and content themselves with purely honorific non-voting seats. As non-elected voting delegates they stand in direct conflict with the democratic process. If we believe in democracy, only delegates elected in primaries and caucuses have the legitimacy to vote at the convention. In the wake of the Spitzer scandal and the 'anything goes' Clinton presidential campaign, the Democratic party is in danger of losing credibility with the public. The hypocrisy of a party leadership supposedly committed to democracy but in a position to overturn the decision of a majority of elected delegates would be too much to swallow. At the same time, the superdelegates have a golden opportunity, by recusing themselves, to reestablish their democratic bona fides, and those of the party. Anything less could be fatal to the party's future.
