Dear Pope Benedict and President Bush:
As a Catholic wife, mother and advocate for victims of clergy sex abuse crimes and their families, many life lessons have been revealed to the world since the clergy sex abuse crisis erupted in 2002. May God bless the courageous survivors of clergy sex abuse crimes for their public outcry that told painful truths to the world. Your ENABLING is needed in the interests of justice and peace in the world.
ENABLERS of the past and today are often disguised as persons in positions of power and trust, with the duty to act in the interests of justice, safety and the common good of all persons equally. Unfortunately, ENABLERS from the past are not getting the message and continuing to interfere with justice as ENABLERS of today. Some examples of ENABLERS in the past and ENABLERS of today:
1. The Judge, Paris Hilton's attorney, Sheriff Lee Baca and the media, have turned Paris Hilton's misdemeanor crime into an out-of-control and disgraceful example of the justice system, using her wealth and fame to prove to the world the justice system is fair and uncompromising. Nothing is further from the truth. ENABLERS of today are responsible for twisted interpretations of justice and exploiting Paris Hilton's fame and wealth as an example of misdemeanor justice.
2. Cardinal Mahoney's attorneys and Judge supervising a sex abuse lawsuit against the LA Catholic Archdiocese, scheduled for trial on June 11,2007 has continued the trial again and again, after years of denied justice. The trial date was changed because a Judge ordered punitive damages were allowed... and you are both fully aware why punitive damages are ordered by Judges -- because intentional wrongs destroyed lives of innocent children and families.
3. Judge Reggie B. Walton declared there had been over whelming evidence that Scooter Libby is guilty on multiple counts of obstructions of justice, giving false statements and perjury. Libby lied under oath and will now be held responsible for his crimes. Will ENABLERS of today intefere with the sentence ordered by Judge Walton?
4. A Catholic Whisleblower in Chicago, also a mandated reporter, a principal of a Catholic school has faced employment termination after 27 years of service. The principal's employment contract was not renewed, a legal technicality that allows the Catholic Church to intimidate its employees from speaking out to protect children. The list of Catholic Whistleblowers has grown substantially since the clergy sex abuse crisis erupted in 2002 and continues to grow. Children will never be safe as long as illegal business and employment practices ENABLE denied due process of the law -- and children will never be safe!
President George Bush granted immunity to Pope Benedict and the Vatican for approximately 100,000 sex abuse crimes committed in the United States of America. Why did Pope Benedict ask for immunity? Why did President Bush grant immunity to Pope Benedict and the Vatican and not ALL religious institutions and leaders?
President Bush and Pope Benedict -- you are meeting in Rome today. Please stop ALL the ENABLERS of the past from continuing as ENABLERS of today. Our children and grandchildren deserve to be safe and must witness how we correct the horrific clergy sex abuse crisis in the world. May God bless you as you lead the world.
