Sam's Club uses cell phone tones to get listeners' attention in radio ads, and apparently does not care that it causes death and slaughter on the highways. When you're "riding along in your automobile"- (Chuck Berry), and you hear a cell phone ring, you automatically take eyes off the road, and start to look for your cell phone. Oops, sorry--By the time you find out it is not your phone, it is too late; you are dead.
A second or two of inattention is particularly lethal to teenagers, who are more prone to distraction. Hey, at least Walmart can say the dead kids were made in America.
But seriously, we have all had the experience: we hear a phone ring; we feel a small jolt of adrenalin, or anxiety, or something; and we look or listen for the phone (taking focus off of whatever activity we are doing). Unfortunately, when we are driving, it is probably equivalent to a shot of whisky, in that split second(s) when another car may be headed toward us.
And it's not just Sam's Club; it's Air America, it's Fox News; it's everybody. A radio tone is an incredibly effective way to get instant attention. Besides being a constant source of irritation, it is immoral, and should be illegal.
Please write a letter to advertisers that use cell phone ring tones. Tell them you will not buy their product; they are killers.
