Here are some thoughts on fear inspired by and adapted from a section of the book "A Course in Miracles".

::::::::

We complain about fear, but we nevertheless persist in making ourselves fearful. God knows fear does not exist, but we do not. For God to intervene between our thoughts and their results would be tampering with a basic law of cause and effect – the most fundamental law there is. God would hardly be helping us if He depreciated the power of our own thinking. It is much more helpful for God to remind us that we do not guard our thoughts carefully enough. We might say at this point that it would take a miracle to enable us to do this, which is perfectly true. Presently we are not used to miracle-minded thinking, but we can be trained to think that way. All miracle workers are in need of such training.

Miracle working entails a full realization of the power of thought in order to avoid miscreation. The miracle worker must have genuine respect for true cause and effect as a necessary condition for the miracle to occur.

Both miracles and fear come from thoughts. We are fearful of everyone and everything. We are afraid of God and afraid of ourselves. We have misperceived or miscreated our relationship with our Creator and we believe in what we have made. The fundamental conflict in this world is between creation and miscreation, or between love and fear.

“Cause” is a term that properly belongs to God. His “Effect” is His Son. We cannot control fear because we ourselves made it, and our belief in it seems to render it out of our control. Any attempt to resolve this error through attempting the mastery of fear is useless. In fact, this only seemingly asserts the power of fear by the assumption that we need to master fear. By believing in fear, we have placed ourselves in a position where we believe in the power of something that does not exist.

Nothing and everything cannot coexist. To believe in one is to deny the other. Fear is really nothing, and love is everything. When light enters darkness, the darkness is abolished. What we believe is true for us. Ultimately, there is no compromise between everything and nothing. All God’s creations are His Sons and every one is an integral part of the whole Sonship. Only when all the parts of the Sonship have returned can the meaning of wholeness in the true sense be understood. Any part of the Sonship can choose to believe in error or incompleteness, but if we do, then we are placing our belief in the existence of nothingness. The only way to correct this error in our thinking is through the Atonement.
