With Congress scheduled to adjourn in nine days, delaying tactics such as a filibuster could kill the drive to enact detainee legislation before the November 7 elections, a White House priority. ----- Canada Plans Official Torture Protest http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/092006a.shtml A formal Canadian protest to Washington appeared to be planned on Tuesday as the result of an official inquiry into the US deportation in 2002 of a Canadian citizen to Syria, where he was subsequently tortured. ----- Wolfowitz Shut Down by World Bank Officials http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/092006i.shtml In an effective rebuke to Mr. Wolfowitz, amid accusations from inside and outside the bank that he has pursued his anti-corruption strategy in a high-handed fashion, ministers from around the globe, who are the ultimate governors of the world's leading development body, moved to assert control. ----- Sarah Rich | 101 Days in Prison for Protesting for Peace http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/092006b.shtml Sarah Rich writes about her daughter Suzanne Swift, now being held in military prison. Suzanne went AWOL because she was being sexually harassed by military superiors. "With the increasing media attention, Suzanne has been getting more and more silent, yet solid, support from other active women in the military. This gives us great hope that we are helping effect change for them, as well as validating women veterans' experiences and working to create new hope for the future safety of young women who hope to serve their country without fear of harassment and abuse someday." ----- Gonzales Wants Law to Force Internet Companies to Save Customer Info http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/092006c.shtml Attorney General Alberto Gonzales said Tuesday that Congress should require Internet service providers to preserve customer records, asserting that prosecutors need them to fight child pornography. ----- Bernard Weiner | Control the Dictionary, Control the World http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/092006e.shtml Bush, with a straight face, tells us that he has never authorized torture, and he thinks he can get away with that lie because the public is mostly unaware that his administration has totally altered the definition of 'torture,'" writes Bernard Weiner. ----- Susan Van Haitsma | The Ground Truth: Iraq War Veterans Speak Out http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/092006f.shtml [snip] "... The students weren't told that the primary purpose of the military is to harness their youthful energy for killing." ----- Georgia Law Requiring Voters to Show Photo ID Is Thrown Out http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/092006g.shtml ----- Mission: To Reconcile America and the World http://www.truthout.org/docs_2005/092006h.shtml Corine Lesnes reports an American businessman's assessment that the American government is no longer a credible messenger: "It says something. In the rest of the world, people don't believe it." I was wrong. I've loved America for most of my 58 years. I've fought for her, killed for her, bled for her and damn near died for her more than once. I served my country even when I thought she was wrong because I felt it was my duty as an American to do so. But I can no longer do so. America today has become what we always stood up against: A tyrant, a destroyer of freedom, an international murderer with no regard for human rights or life, no morality and no belief in the rule of law. America now threatens the peace of the world far more than any terrorist group, any communist country or any tinhorn dictator with a suitcase nuke. "I lived with the Americans for one year and eight months as if I was living in hell," Baghdad shopkeeper Amjad Qassim al-Aliyawi told The Associated Press after he was released from 20 months in captivity without ever being charged with a crime or even being told what he was suspected of doing. According to an AP investigative report, the American government holds some 14,000 detainees in secret prisons around the world. Few have any idea why they are held, all are denied legal representation or even given details of the charges against them and many are later released without explanation or even an apology. As Americans give up their First Amendment rights of speech, to become politically correct, the State becomes our god, master, teacher and leader. Markus Wolf, FORMER HEAD OF THE FEARED EAST GERMAN SECRET POLICE, IS NOW WORKING WITH HOMELAND SECURITY. So you can see the future being laid out for those of us who love liberty. And why did many mainstream media outlets ignore the most crucial facts of this case? We do know that Abramoff established scam operations to take in lobby money and spend it as he saw fit. The "Capitol Athletic Foundation" took in $6 million for "needy and deserving" sportsmanship programs. But it used less than 1 percent of its revenue on such programs. Native American leaders contributed millions to the foundation. In 2002, the foundation reported it had given away more than $330,000 in grants to four organizations that said they never received the money. Instead, Abramoff used the organization for his pet projects. These included over $4 million to a Jewish school allied with the Zionist movement, $248,742 for Abramoff's house in Silver Spring, Maryland and hundreds of thousands for sniper training of extremist and illegal Israeli colonial settlers living on Palestinian land. Ironically, Native Americans were defrauded into funding oppression and colonization of other native people. Abramoff also used his influence with Congressman Bob Ney to get a government contract worth $3 million for an obscure Israeli security company. That these details are not mentioned in most media outlets perhaps gives us clues as to why Abramoff and Nye got off the hook so easily, despite overwhelming evidence of corruption and graft. After all, it is the same Justice Department that refuses to implement US law with regard to lobbying for foreign powers in the case of the Israel lobby. Public trials in both cases would expose the US public to the uncomfortable facts of the detrimental impact of the Israel lobby on US foreign policy. Since "Free Speech" began on the CBS Evening News on September 5, CBS has featured three Republicans or conservatives, but not one progressive pundit or Democrat, as Media Matters for America has documented. The relatively new science makes use of extremely small particles, on the scale of one-billionth of a meter in size; larger than atoms, but much smaller than a cell. Nanoparticles are now used in a wide variety of consumer products, including high-capacity computer drives, food packaging, shampoos, sunscreens, and cosmetics. Nanoparticles' unique behavior offers great promise to their future use, but some experts are concerned the products are being released on the market too soon and without adequate safety testing. Early research has found that nanoparticles easily pass through body tissues from one area of the body to another. Laboratory studies already warn that nanoparticles can cause inflammation, damage brain cells, and cause pre-cancerous lesions. The fall issue of the journal "Sustainable Development Law & Policy" takes a good look at the new technology and the current lack of federal oversight of this promising yet unpredictable consumer productline. Neighbors or passersby can connect in seconds. Worse, Wi-Fi freeloaders may use your connection for illegal activities. When the police come knocking, it'll be on your door. Your connection could also be used to send spam. If so, your Internet service provider might cut you off. Then there's the data you transmit over the Internet. It's easy to intercept data on an unsecured network. Free tools let intruders capture every keystroke that you make. Or, how about the man-in-the-middle attack? This is a complex undertaking. A hacker configures his computer to act as the router. Your computer connects to the hacker's, which connects to the Internet. All your data passes through the hacker's computer. These are scary scenarios. But you can avoid them by securing your network. Your wireless router probably came with security disabled. So you must set it up. Consult your router's manual to learn how to access its settings. Don't get taken - find out what you need to know about securing your wireless network.
