The internet is not a convenient dumping place where its anonymity insures you can say anything you want

::::::::

                                  Our Audience is the World

Decades ago people like movie makers suddenly became far more self-aware when they looked at what they had created. In some cases some of those people became aware that they had made art that was very macho and full of awful stuff.

Since then some of the folks who make movies have begun to make movies that are no longer simply influenced by an old outmoded culture but rather are making movies that are leading-edge contributors of new cultural movements. Women's lib evironmentalism and the likes are well served by the film industry.

Having a new medium with which to express yourself  causes people to become  more aware of what they are doing. Today this same kind of thing is happening to average people around  the world as many of us are beginning to use the world wide web.

Two different things are happening. On the one hand the internet gives an element of anonymity where people can get away with saying whatever they please. These activities have names like "trolling" and "flaming". You can incite others to go off or go off yourself.

On the other hand one can also realize that the potential audience out there is the world itself. What you would not do on a stage in front of a large number of people  you should not do on the world wide web.

To touch on these two elements of talking on the world wide web I have written the following poem.

Poem About  Speaking on the Internet

The outer world is a mess

A dying patriarchy rules there

But this Electronic Global Village

Is to some degree unspoiled and sacred

A woman and a man can speak here

One as easily as the other

No corporate or government walls

Keep men in and women out

So when a man or a woman

Says misogynistic statements here

I am going to take him/her to task

"Please do not violate this place"

Anyone on the planet can read what you say here

Your words should not be casually spoken

A youth could be led astray, a fragile heart broken

Or a mad man pushed over the edge

This is Earth-in-Rebirth

This is the new planet-wide culture

Do not desecrate this place

And expect me to be silent about it

As  we become more aware of what  we are doing

By using this new kind of space

We  humans will grow and become more sensitive

And become planet-neurons co-thinking planet thoughts

I am a hippy that never dropped out. I have held on to impossible idealism and will not give up. I think the human race is a ticking time bomb and we are at the last tick. So what is the good of slow careful pragmatism that allows time for it all to (more...)
