Many observers believe that by ignoring and/or belilttling religion in past elections, Democrats have cost themselves large numbers of voters who sympathize with their positions on issues but to whom religion and spirituality are important components of life. Rabbi Michael Lerner, author of "God's Left Hand" is the leading proponent of that view and it is one with which I completely agree.
This article is a decent overview of the current state of religion's role in the campaign.
