ACT NOW! Remind Bush that only Congress can declare war. Sign the letter today:I'm writing to urge you to add your signature to the Sense of Congress resolution introduced by Congressman Peter DeFazio. This bill would remind George W. Bush that he is legally bound to obtain the approval of Congress before launching a military strike against Iran.
Such an action would involve reprising and magnifying all of the mistakes engendered by the rush to war in Iraq: the mobilization of an already over-extended military, the "collateral damage" of Iran's cities and civilians, the siphoning off and mismanagement of our depleted military budget and the tarnishing of America's diplomatic credibility throughout the world.
It is especially important that Congress insist that the President respect its Constitutionally-defined role as the sole "decider" of whether to declare war because nuclear force is one of the "options" Bush has made clear "are on the table" as a possible tactic.
As Pulitzer prizewinning journalist Seymour Hersh reported recently in the New Yorker, "There's no pressure from Congress not to take military action. The only political pressure is from the guys who want to do it." Please do your part to ensure that all Americans, through their elected Congressmen, are fairly represented when it comes to planning our foreign policy towards Iran; a policy that may or may not require military force.
