"If the Constitution is to have any relevance, and if America is to remain a free society..." so starts Dave Lindorff's recent article. Lindorff is a smart and good man, but he loses this case with his first line.

The Constitution has been already relegated to a historical artifact with no longer any relevance, by Bushco, a status later confirmed by Obama, and in both cases endorsed by the approval or silence of Congress and an obeisant electorate. The president can commission or permit indeterminable incarceration, torture and execution without due process, not only with impunity but with scarce objection even by the partisan "opposition," and in the face of an index approaching zero accountability by an electorate which is aroused only by calls to "Support Our Troops" in one treacherous endeavor after another for 12 years -- and to support "our" candidate over "their" candidate in the process of our faux elections, which are variously rigged or persuaded by greed interests buying out our government.
And as far as "to remain a free society" -- it's already gone. Anyone can be arrested without charge and held indefinitely, and tortured or assassinated by executive order, or by any others so authorized by the executive -- and the electorate doesn't object, hardly notices, except perhaps to castigate anyone who dares raise a voice against the treachery that has become routine.
America is over. And it won't come back unless it is earned. And the political partisans who insist that "our" candidate is better than "their" candidate -- or more pathetically "lesser-evil" -- are either part of the conspiracy or simply imbecilic.
Jefferson, Adams, Franklin and Washington had a solution for correcting political treachery, a course that would have meant their lives if the King had had his way. Well, there's a new regime in charge now, supported by an electorate that is supportive or oblivious to the current treachery, and it stands by in subservience to anything, repeat anything, including torture, warrantless imprisonment, and execution that the current regime ordains.
That's where we are. And it would appear a good case could be made that such as the major political parties and such as United for Peace and Justice and Veterans for Peace are the Orwellian fronts for our imperators. To that list we can also add most churches (with specific exception of the Friends and possibly the Unitarians) wherein "Support Our Troops" has apparently supplanted the Sixth Commandment.
Yes, I know: difficult, very difficult to accept that reality. Perhaps this finally explains the "good Germans" of the 1930's.

Leaving behind a treacherous government now addicted to perpetual war, its limitlessly greedy and power-lusting masters, as well as the retarded albeit smirky Republicans and their evermore clonish Democrat colleagues, a braindead electorate (more...)
