There was a sort of ad hoc protest against Israel's assault on Gaza this afternoon, with only two days notice, in downtown Norfolk near City Hall, that drew about 30 people who stood at two street corners for several hours past dusk. There had only been one negative reaction when I left, and several hundred horn honks in support, so if you want to call that an unofficial "honking" poll, there is considerable support for an end to the assault on Gaza here in Hampton Roads.

::::::::

Even though most people know Norfolk, Virginia as the home of the largest American naval base in the world, NOB Norfolk, in this greater area known as Hampton Roads, which is inundated with other military bases, schools and commands as well, there is still great diversity of opinions and peoples, even within military ranks. On little notice today, Dec. 30, some thirty protesters began gathering at 4:30 PM in front of the City Hall complex at the corner of St Paul Blvd and City Hall Avenue to speak out against the Israeli assault on Gaza. They were still going strong at nightfall when I left around 6:00 PM. I interviewed four of them during the protest.

After I processed my photos and videos and realized I had four pretty good interviews, I decided to post a video/photo essay in two parts of the event, so here is Part 1, with the first two of four interviews, one with Jerry Tenney, from Smithfield, the second with Joe Filipowski from Norfolk, who went into considerable depth of analysis about not only Israeli, but American foreign policy.

Corner of City Hall Ave and St Paul Blvd, Norfolk. The protest is growing.
