Why do 21st Century Democrats (like the Republicans) continue to ignore the real unemployment rate? The U6--the actual unemployment rate is over 16 percent and has been for over 2 years. The underemployment rate is double that. This is totally unacceptable and Congress and government fiddle like Nero--KAS
Dear Kevin,
Happy Labor Day! This weekend, take some time to thank all the laborers around you: construction workers, teachers, nurses, and more. We couldn't get by without the work they do.
But while we are thanking workers, we must also remember our fellow Americans who are without work. We learned on Friday that no new jobs were added to our economy. Our unemployment rate is still high at 9.1%.
As the White House put it, the unemployment rate is "unacceptably high." The time has clearly come for our lawmakers to get serious about creating jobs.
In May, John Boehner and House Republicans claimed they had a plan to tackle America's unemployment problem: their 10 page "House Republican Plan for America's Jobs Creators." What were some of their solutions? A review of the nation's visa system, repealing the EPA's regulation of greenhouse gases, and speeding up the Food and Drug Administration's vigorous product approval process.
Their ideas don't work. But instead of coming up with ideas that do work, Republicans are content to attack President Obama's job creation efforts. They've attacked his stimulus plan, and Republicans such as Congressman Joe Walsh have already said they will ignore any suggestions presented during the president's address to Congress on Thursday.
It's time for Republicans to stop the partisan games and help Democrats get Americans back to work. Let's send a clear message to Speaker Boehner that we want to see real job creation. Sign our petition and tell him your thoughts!
We all know someone who has been affected by our high unemployment rate. Share our petition with your friends so we can tell Speaker Boehner that Americans want to work!
Sincerely,
Jim Scheibel, Chair
