What do they say? It isn't the crime, it's the cover up stupid.

An embattled Gonzales

Last week Senate dems requested an investigation into whether or not attorney general Alberto Gonzales lied during his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

A group of House democrats, all former prosecutors, are now also calling for Gonzales' impeachment.

Senator Arlen Specter the ranking republican on the committee, gave the White House until noon Tuesday to supply a letter of explanation regarding Gonzales' shady testimony, but as that deadline came and went, Tony Snow said that the White House was working on it.

I'm sure they were, but why the White House and not the Justice Department?

A letter, of sorts, was eventually received by Specter, and it was typical of the administration's cavalier, arrogant attitude toward explaining their actions.

Gonzales basically said that he didn't call the program the "wiretapping program" until recently, so technically he didn't lie when he denied that he went to see a sedated, post-op Ashcroft bearing a ball-point pen so the "wiretapping program" could be illegally reauthorized right before its expiration date....so, FACE Senators.

Much towel snapping heard in the background.

What began as an investigation into the firing of US attorneys for political rather than performance-based reasons, has snow-balled into a full blown examination of the way the Justice Department headed by a not so adequate Bush buddy manager, conducts business as a subsidiary of the White House Corporation.

What do they say? It isn't the crime, it's the cover up?

Would you truly expect anything else at this point?

Right on cue, Cheney chimed in today with "Al's a good
man
," echoing Bush's "total confidence in the attorney general".

I confess that I'm conflicted. Part of me, the lets just say the not so noble yellow dog part of me, thinks Alberto Gonzales is a most excellent gift to the democrats with a presidential election coming up.

Every day this befuddled, incompetent Bush proxy is around, the more he makes the GOP look at the very least, untrustworthy, and I basically like that.

On the other hand, the man is not working as an honest or seemingly even a competent broker for the American people.

Like his former underling Sara Taylor, he seems to have taken an oath to the president rather than the Constitution.

Of course, that fact must trump spin, partisanship, and my propensity to always hope democrats will win.
