What does letting the torturers slide for their crimes say to the rest of us average people? I'll tell you. All those prisoners languishing in US jails for crimes such as stealing food to feed their families, smoking pot and stealing cars are the REAL criminals. Those who commit horrible atrocities against humanity, commit war crimes against children, commit murder and do so in our name are just common white collar criminals who deserve better than trials and jail, they deserve honor and forgiveness. Yes there are two sets of laws, those for the rich and powerful and those for the rest of us. Didn't we fight a war of independence to put an end to this kind of privilege? Weren't the English aristocracy guilty of such crimes? When is it right to place the rich and pwoerful above the law? Answer: the same time that it is right to put an end to such outrageous privilege and practice what Jefferson counseled us to do.
