This coming thursday, Obama will be in Berlin. When the first news of his visit came in, the Brandenburger Tor was his preferred venue but a few smart people were able to change his and his advisor's minds. Today, we're being told the speech will be held at the Siegessäule. While the somewhat heated discussions were still raging, I kept wondering which place in Berlin could be the worst for Obama's speech, thinking, if he's not as bright as he appears to be (which is often the case with "smart" people) and if somebody on his team is actually working for the other team, which place would they select in a way to cast a very bad light on the candidate. My decision fell for the Siegessäule for two reasons :
1) the column reaks of arrogance and superiority and
2) it originally stood in front of the Reichstag but was moved by order of Adolf Hitler to its current location in 1939 to make way for his planned transformation of Berlin into the Nazi capital “Germania.” (Speer's great plan)
Andreas Schockenhoff of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats said, “the Siegessäule in Berlin is dedicated to a victory over neighbors who are today our European friends and allies. It is a problematic symbol.”
If I were Obama, I wouldn't be seen anywhere near the damned thing, let alone hold a speech there. Get ready for some very unfavorable European newspaper articles on the 25th. Who knows, maybe this very stupid move on Obama's part will help open some eyes to what is turning out to be a huge hoax : the selling of a new face at the helm of Imperialism.
