Dear Jim
Apparently Senator McCain does not seem to understand what does it mean to be a statesman. Right now, here he had just insulted a Prime- Minister of a nuclear country by saying that he sees ' KGB' in his eyes. I am sure that made our fellow- americans less safe and less secure. But this foolishness of his is not surprising because Senator McCaine's behavior is a reflection of the behavior of our administration towards Russia, the behavior that can be only characterized as deeply irresponsible.
Diplomacy is an art of the possible. Surrounding the proud and powerful nation, the primary victor in the WWII with unfriendly sites, provoking the leaders off the new nations on its borders to snarl at their neighbor like dogs (while it would be in their vital interests to stay neutral and friendly), bullying, patronising, insulting and behaving foolishly- all of that not only makes Russia our enemy- it also shows to the whole world our incompetency and shallow malice. It is putting our country into mortal danger, depriving it of a potential ally and selling our freedoms for bigotry and total idiocy. Senator McCain had just demonstrated to the whole world the poisonous fruits of that policy.
Russia must become our friend. It has to be our top foreign policy priority. It will benefit both sides immensely. We have to work on that first and foremost by acknowledging it as an equal partner. We have to wise up and stop telling Russians what they have to do. Instead we have to proclaim our support for every type of peaceful dialogue. We must refrain from the criminal fetching little sneaky govts like the one in Georgia at Russia and instead offer our help in buiiding the net of neutral nations. We should withdraw our missile sites (in whatever state they are) from the Eastern Europe and stop the process of NATO expansion. We should put all our lawamakers through the thorough study of what does that mean a lawmaker and a diplomat and forbid our representatives forever to behave arrrogantly and patronizingly. Congress should abandon the stupid and dangerous practice of adopting resolutions which tell other countries what to do. We should start direct negotiations with Russia on helping to build an international commission on the conflict with Georgia and compensation to the families of the civilians killed. We should stop all our military activity in Georgia and abandon the idea of retraining the Georgian army. We should make new guarantees that we do not have any interests in that region except for humanitarian and invite the Moscow Orthodox Patriarch to visit US.
Now, if making Russia our true friend and ally does not boost the safety and security of the US people I have a bridge to nowhere in Alaska to sell to you. And I'll throw in senator McCain and Gov. Palin as a charming bonus.
