We shouldn't rush this infrastructure spending. If all emphasis is put on haste and no emphasis is put on quality, we'll have a bunch of bad projects across this country that we will regret for decades, long after this recession is over. The Interstate Highway Act of 1956, perhaps more than any other factor, is responsible for suburban sprawl and the auto- and oil- dependent country we live in today. This has had disastrous consequences for our environment and our health (since we not only breathe the exhaust fumes but we hardly walk for transportation anymore, making us the most overweight country on Earth).
We shouldn't be building a bunch of new freeways and turnpikes, we should be building up public transportation and engaging in denser "smart growth" urban planning. Otherwise, we will buy stimulus at the price of more sprawl, auto dependency, and environmental devastation.
