CBS Market News just released new unemployment figures that gives the lie to Bush's relentless mantra that our economy is "soaring," and that "entrepreneurs" (his favorite word) are creating jobs at an Energizer Bunny rate.

::::::::

The convoluted mish-mash below is written NOT to calm fears but to assure readers there's no reason to even HAVE fears. Take a look:

U.S. initial jobless claims surge by 43,000 to 364,000 By Rex Nutting

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - First-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits jumped by 43,000 to 364,000 last week, the highest since September, the Labor Department reported Thursday. It was the biggest increase in nearly three years. However, a Labor Department official once again encouraged users of the data to look at the less-volatile and more-informative four-week moving average of new claims, which rose by 750 to 333,000. The number of ex-workers collecting unemployment checks rose by 61,000 to 2.84 million in the week ending Dec. 25, the highest since September. The four-week average of continuing claims increased by 13,500 to 2.77 million, a six-week high.

******

Hey, no problem. Except for those who are steadily losing their jobs in America. These people might opt NOT to look at the "less volatile and more informative" bluster and go right to the heart of the matter, to wit:

U.S. initial jobless claims SURGE to 364,000 By Rex Nutting

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) - First-time claims jumped to 364,000 last week, the BIGGEST INCREASE in nearly three years. The number of ex-workers collecting unemployment ROSE to 2.84 million. Continuing claims INCREASED to 2.77 million, a SIX-WEEK HIGH.

Kinda hard to sleep after digesting that, isn't it? There are millions of Americans who find it hard to even blink, and it's small comfort to know that their numbers increase by tens of thousands every month.
