Despite my familiarity with Pat Buchanan's long history of bigoted and antisemitic rhetoric, I was ready to give him the benefit of the doubt when it was reported that he referred to President Obama as "your boy" when speaking to Al Sharpton on MSNBC. He seemed somewhat sincere - if defiant - when he tried to explain the comment the next morning. However, when I heard the clip, I changed my mind. Obviously, Pat Buchanan does not have a southern accent. However, he suddenly sported an exaggerated southern accent when uttering the phrase "your boy." Why was that? It certainly added a historical context to the use of the phrase, as if that were needed in this case. Interestingly, he also went on, in the same interview, to refer to Congressman Emanuel Cleaver as "your boy," when talking to Sharpton.
If nothing else, Buchanan exhibited extreme insensitivity - I suspect it went a bit further than that.
