What follows are verbatim financial announcements from both the University of Cincinnati's web sites and the Ohio State University's web sites. Both the The University of Cincinnati and The Ohio State University require students to carry medical insurance policies that I describe as being "UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS" or "COMPETITIVE WITH UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS." The University of Cincinnati has posted a snarky requirement about laptop computers - the wording of which bears an uncanny resemblance to their requirements for medical insurance policies.

What is comparable coverage?

Coverage that is comparable to that offered by the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) for non-network providers (please note that the coverage for SHIP network providers is much better):

* A private medical health insurance plan through a recognized company that is owned, headquartered, and operated in the United States.
* Foreign insurance plans with U.S. affiliates/representatives, travel insurance plans, and reimbursement programs of any kind do not qualify, including reimbursement arrangements of vouchers for home governments or their U.S.-based consulates.
* Provides a minimum of $500,000 in lifetime benefits.
* Provides 60% coverage of hospitalization fees.
* Provides 60% coverage of professional fees (e.g., lab tests, x-rays, doctor's visits, etc.).

McMicken College Laptop Requirements

Beginning fall quarter 2010, all incoming A&S students (freshmen and transfer) are required to purchase laptop computers. This requirement extends to all A&S majors, including Exploratory Studies. Listed below are minimum specifications for computers, which are available at the UC Bookstore.
Minimum Specifications

* Processor speed: Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz or higher
* Memory: 2GB or higher
* Storage Capacity: 160GB or higher
* Screen Size: 13" or higher

It's highly recommended that students purchase at least three years of warranty protection with their laptop.

The UC Bookstore offers a wide variety of computers from Apple, Dell and Hewlett-Packard meeting the above requirements.

If students choose to purchase laptops from the UC Bookstore, it is recommended to buy them during orientation to get the best sale prices on laptops and software needs. Student IDs are required to get discounted rates.

Laptops can be purchased from any source, so long as they are comparable to the specifications above.

Journalism majors, please note: A Mac laptop is preferred for 2010 incoming freshmen and required for 2011 incoming freshmen. Journalism majors in the photojournalism concentration are required to have a Mac laptop.
