The other day, I was talking to my mother - one of those die-hard Hillary supporters - just before Biden was picked as Obama's VP. She said, "The only way Obama will win is if he picks Hillary." I know she is not alone in her social group.
I really have a hard time understanding this narrow view of Hillary Clinton's place in the Democratic party - narrow in two ways.
First, the idea that Hillary is the only person who can deliver victory to the Democrats, makes very little sense. There are many talented people in the party. Senator Clinton is very bright. She has worked hard, and is an excellent Senator. She has a great story to tell, going from First Lady to Senator. But she also is a tremendous galvanizer of the Right. They will come out to vote against her.
I also find it puzzling that so many describe Hillary as being a fighter. As I watched the primary process, I found her to be not so much fighter as a joiner. She took on every smear tactic on the Right - even meeting with those who smeared her in the 90's!
Second: did it ever occur to these die-hard Hillary supporters, that VP is not the only decision Barack Obama will make, if he is elected president? Maybe he thinks Hillary would be best suited as a Supreme Court justice. (I happen to agree.) Such a strategy would take feminists much further, than a McCain presidency which promises to roll back Roe v. Wade.
