The NYT is reporting that Pakastani President and US ally Pervez Musharraf has derided former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto for taking excessive security risks. Bhutto was assassinated by a gun man late last year.
It is ironic that Musharraf should blame Ms. Bhutto for taking excessive security risks when he had taken such little action to provide her with adequate security and to protect her from assassins and suicide bombers.
Bhutto was Mushararaf's primary political opponent prior to her recent assassination ahead of parliamentary elections this month.
Musharraf's future relationship with the United States ought to come under increased scrutiny following his failure to protect Bhutto as well as his feeble efforts to eradicate terrorist elements within his own borders.
Currently, it is not clear whether there is a suitable replacement or alternative to Musharraf. Nuwaz Sharif perhaps deserves another look.
What is clear, however, is that nurturing alliances of convenience is not always in the American interest. Cozying up with fairweather democrats often breeds tomorrow's dictators.
