I never thought it was a good thing that I had experience doing so many types of jobs during the Great Recession, and even now I am retraining at my age for nursing career, but now I can see that my experience in this jobs and even attempts to get jobs like that of police officer can offer some insight.

Let's disarm our officer, put plain clothes on him or her, and let's take that person into a middle school classroom as a middle school teacher. I have been in this type of job. I have had a whole classroom of students throwing paperclips, pencils at me, and I have been threatened all this while I was pregnant. . Once again, I have been threatened with violence, and had convicted criminals sitting in the classroom. I have had groups of students verbally and one time physically attacking me all day like a gang of wolves. In most cases I managed to get most of the students back on task. Before you poo-poo a teacher's job, I will let you know that I have seen ex-military step in as a substitute teacher one day, and say they will never come back.

Here's another job I have had, mental health counselor. These people walk into situations everyday with violent, mentally ill individuals. They are unarmed, and must de-escalate the situation, and work with out of control individuals all the time. Let's get our officer to work as a mental health counselor or with a psychiatrist where criminally insane individuals are held.

Let's take our hypothetical officer into a long-term facility for Alzheimer's patients. He must work as a nursing assistant. Many of the patients are violent or can be violent. You cannot restraint, strike, or verbally abuse anyone. As the sun goes down sometimes the whole ward will go nuts.

Let's not forget our brave nurses and doctors who work in the emergency room unarmed everyday. They often have violent, intoxicated, injured people or family members to deal with all the time. Many nurses are physically injured due to patients striking them. Amazing work these people do without a gun.

Let's get them to work in those jobs and learn how to deal with situations without a gun and where no violence is allowed. I think they would become better police officers.
