Monica Novotny of MSNBC: Today’s WORST Person in the World!

I was reminded this morning, as I am every day, of why I find mainstream media so offensive.  Listening to anchor Monica Novotny’s interview with an entertainment correspondent who was reviewing upcoming holiday releases, she was aghast at one of the better reviewed films, a foreign film due to be released around Christmas called, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, directed by Julian Schnabel.  The film is based on the best selling book by Jean-Dominic Bauby who, at 43, had a massive stroke which left him paralyzed and unable to communicate other than through his eyes. .

The entertainment correspondent was quick to point out that it was perhaps one of the best films of the year, a film that surely would be recognized come Oscar time.  However, before he could get out a full synopsis of the movie, he was abruptly interrupted by nothing short of a hysterical rant of idiocy.  As he described the film as dealing with the true story of Bauby, a quadriplegic who communicated through blinking, Novotny blurted out in faux weepy hysteria, “Oh no! No! Not for a holiday movie!”  When the reviewer attempted to continue with his praise for this film, again she spewed, “Oh, please no! Not a good movie for the holiday’s – it sounds like a real downer!”

A “real downer,” Monica?  The real downer is that people like Jean-Dominic Bauby, and all others who use canes and walkers and wheelchairs, are obese, or fat or stocky, or have lumpy thighs, for all of those with wrinkles and receding hairlines, those with acne or port wine birth marks or brown eyes, for everyone who is flat-chested or wide-bottomed, too short, too tall, too ugly, too old to be seen in public –  are deemed as "less than."  GUESS WHAT?  They, WE are all a contributing force of the human race – not perfect, thank God, not botoxed to a still, waxy caricature of perfection, not perfectly shaped with full, glossy heads of hair and boobs perennially at full attention, but part of humanity.  In fact, the majority of the population.

God forbid we allow those in wheelchairs or with crow’s feet out on our streets.  Protect the children! Bring in the pets! Unless, of course, your child has a bladder control problem, or your dog has three legs, or visa versa, then hide them too!  As someone who cared for a loved one confined to a wheelchair for the last two years of his life; who was quadriplegic yet could still enjoy his friends and family, still laugh at a good joke, enjoy a sip of perfect rye Manhattan, watch good films, listen to angelic music and books on tape, be moved by sunsets or a single chickadee, could love and be loved, I take great exception to your premise that a movie that deals with life – all of it – should not be released, let alone seen by our masses during the holiday season for fear that the lead character is less than perfect, and thus, the movie would be too much of a downer.

I suggest we have a "time out" -- a day where all media personnel and celebs without brains, sans sensitivity and compassion, and who need to rest after all that cosmetic surgery, fat sucking, and facial needle pricks that make them look as though they are in perpetual “alarm mode,”stay home, behind closed doors, and let the “real” people who live life in the moment and with character and honesty and grace, run the show.  No, your television set does not need adjusting.

So today, my vote goes to Monica Novotny of MSNBS as The Worst Person in the World!
