I have to wonder what some of my gay tribal members are smoking sometimes. In the Advocate story (http://www.advocate.com/print_article_ektid40224.asp)written by Jennifer Chrisler of Family Pride, there are many words wasted on the "what if...." scenarios that might occur in the future for the threesome composed of Mary Cheney, Heather Poe, and a developing fetus that remains as yet unnamed, conceived in the ordinary manner perhaps, or by other more mechanical means.
Currently the future trio lives in Virginia, one of the most restrictive states of the union in regards to gay equality. The article describes several things the Virginia laws will prevent the Cheney/Poe family from enjoying the same legal conditions that straight parents now have. Here's just a sample: One or both of the mommies could die or become incapacitated suddenly before the child reaches majority and who will have medical authority, or the mommies could divorce and sue the other for visitation, etc, In other words, the whole nine yards of problems that make marriage with children a trial.
But what few of us are familiar with is the untold wealth of the Cheney Corporation. This unnamed grandchild will be joining a board of directors that already includes five grandchildren thanks to Mary's older sister Elizabeth, with a sixth on the way that will be here before Mary's contribution arrives.
None of these Cheney children will face a life of challenge in their adulthood such as most other children born in this period of American history.
The Cheney Corporation, founded by the current unelected vice-president, will see to their every need in perpetuity with nearly unlimited financial depth and a spider's web of influential and powerful associates on call for any situation that might develop unto the last generation.
Do I wish happiness on the new family-to-be? I don't need to--their lives are not in the same circle as mine, a whole other universe couldn't divide us more. Do I have sympathy for their legal condition in Virgina? No. We're talking about American corporate royalty. They don't need anyone's sympathy!
But I do wish that every American child could have just a small portion of the opportunities that will accrue to the accident of birth awaiting Mary's baby--accident from the baby's POV, that is.
Ah, yes, another immaculate conception from a woman named Mary!
