A brief look at expressionist artist Larry Poons.

Larry Poons continues to do what he’s been doing for a long time.  And this is, lecturing about and teaching art, promoting art, being the subject of films about art, and of course, producing art.  Four images of Poon’s innovative and impressive Abstract Expressionist paintings are reproduced below, following his (famous?) one-line introduction to his works:

The artist was born in Tokyo, in 1937.  In 2007, he was residing in New York City and teaching at the Art Students League.  His Chronology, as presented by artnet’s Artist Works Catalogues, follows:

1955-1957: Studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. 

1959: Studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts.

1966: Subject of film Manual of Arms, produced by Hollis Frampton. 

1968: Instructor, Bennington College, Bennington, Vermont. 

1969: Visiting Faculty, New York Studio School, New York. 

1970: Subject of film with Frank Stella. 

1971-1972: Instructor, Cooper Union, New York, New York. 

1976: Guest Lecturer, Broward Community College, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

1984: Subject of film Painters Painting: A Contested History 1940-1970, produced by Emile di Antonio and Mitch Tuchman. 1988: Francis J. Geenbruger Foundation Award; and, Guest Lecturer, Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. 

1989: Guest Lecturer, Ted Deer College, Alberta, Canada. 

1992: Guest Lecturer, University of Tampa, Tampa, Florida; also, juror, Ohio State Fair; and, Guest Lecturer, in Brooklyn, New York.

1993: Guest Lecturer, Union College, Schenectady, New York. 

1994: Guest Lecturer, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. 

1998: Panel discussion, Tufts University, Medford Massachusetts. 

1999: Subject of a documentary film Larry Poons produced by ART/New York. 

2000: Guest Lecturer, Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, Massachusetts; also Guest Lecturer, Fulton Montgomery College, Johnstown, New York. 

2001: Subject of film Larry Poons: His Endless Creativity produced by Bill Page. 

2002: Guest Lecturer, Winchester School, Hampshire, England. 

2004: Participated in Artist Talk on Art Panel Series, Art Students League, New York; and, Subject of panel discussion “Larry Poons and the Course of Abstract Painting” hosted by Art in America with William C. Agee, Robert C. Morgan and Karen Wilkin, in conversation with Larry Poons, Jacobson Howard Gallery, New York. 

2005: Featured in documentary film Who Gets to Call it Art produced by Peter Rosen.

2006: Guest Lecturer, New York Studio School, New York; and, Guest Lecturer, Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, Massachusetts.”
