Before Obama has been sworn in as President of the United States, he has already afforded Americans an easy escape from the consequences of misconduct. When asked if he would seek to prosecute the (likely) criminal activities of the Bush Administration, he said we have to look forward, not backward.Great! I plan on telling that to the next traffic officer that stops me for speeding.
I ask myself, in these tough economic times, why not start growing marijuana, mixing up some drugs, and making a huge profit on their sale. If a drug enforcement officer catches me, no problem. I'll just repeat what the "President" says. "Chill out, Mr. DEA. Look to the future. Even if I sell drugs tomorrow, those actions will be in the past the day after tomorrow."
What a glorious idea! The worst crimes in the world are practically always in the past. Give mass murder a few seconds, and poof, it's ancient history by presidential standards.
And the sky's the limit. All the complaints my wife makes about me are now in the past. If she doesn't agree, I'll just have to remind her of what the president said.
To the future! A glorious world wherein we can do whatever we want so long as time is ticking. It's Equal Opportunity Impunity.
The only problem is that it is change I just can't believe in. The cops and the courts are one thing. The media are one thing, well, technically their next to nothing these days. But I just can't believe my wife is going to fall for this.
And if my wife won't, I doubt Michelle does either.
Another issue is that my wife invariably remembers things differently. I might entertain myself by telling myself that it doesn't matter what happened because the president said that whatever happened, it's in the past now. But my wife won't even agree with me on what the president said. Can I use a thing from the past to provide a blanket excuse for my past actions?
And am I big enough to allow others the same excuse when they trample on my rights? How do I even know I have any rights? What if my neighbors say the Constitution is in the past, they're forgiving the Founding Fathers, and then proceeds to let anarchy reign?
The big question is: If an expert at constitutional law becomes president after a presidency like Bush's, and does nothing but looks to the future, then pray tell me, what hope does this country really have?
