... Marine Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said yesterday that he has no information indicating Iran's government is directing the supply of lethal weapons to Shiite insurgent groups in Iraq.

Chris Floyd | The Anglo-American Dirty War in Iraq
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021307J.shtml
Chris Floyd writes, "With the Anglo-American coalition so deeply embedded in dirty war infiltrating terrorist groups, 'stimulating' them into action, protecting 'crown jewel' double-agents no matter what the cost, 'riding with the bad boys,' greenlighting the 'Salvador Option' it is simply impossible to determine the genuine origin of almost any particular terrorist outrage or death squad atrocity in Iraq."

Ex-Agent Ties Firing to CIA Pressure on WMD
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021307N.shtml
A federal judge has ruled that a CIA agent identified only as "Doe," who was allegedly fired after he gathered prewar intelligence showing that Iraq was not developing weapons of mass destruction, can proceed with his lawsuit against the CIA.

http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021307L.shtml
"Before things get any more out of hand, President Bush needs to make his intentions toward Iran clear. And Congress needs to make it clear that this time it will be neither tricked nor bullied into supporting another disastrous war," writes the New York Times.

Ray McGovern | Bush and Cheney Playing Role of Kevorkian for Israel
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021307M.shtml
Ray McGovern writes: "President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney are unwittingly playing Dr. Jack Kevorkian in helping the state of Israel commit suicide. For this is the inevitable consequence of the planned air and missile attack on Iran. The pockmarked, littered landscape in Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan, and the endless applicant queues at al-Qaeda and other terrorist recruiting stations, testify eloquently to the unintended consequences of myopic policymakers in Washington and Tel Aviv."

Five Ousted US Attorneys Received Positive Job Evaluations
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021307O.shtml
Although the Bush administration has said that six US attorneys were fired recently in part because of 'performance related' issues, at least five of them received positive job evaluations before they were ordered to step down. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, using authority he gained in March from a little-noticed provision of the Patriot Act, has appointed interim US attorneys from the Bush administration's inner circle. The firings and appointments have raised concerns that Gonzales is politicizing the process.

Seth Sandronsky | California Crime and Punishment
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021307P.shtml
"Heard of California's '10-20-life' law? It mandates a life sentence penalty for shooting a victim while committing a felony crime. A current proponent of this law is Mike Villines, a Republican who
represents Clovis and leads the party in the state assembly. In his view, the '10-20-life' law decreases violent crime and increases public safety. However, this law may not be as effective as he claims. Consider the homicide rate in Sacramento last year," writes Seth Sandronsky.

Colonel Ann Wright (Retired) | An Appeal to Conscience to Those Who Would Bomb Iran
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021307B.shtml
Colonel Ann Wright (retired) writes: "I appeal to the conscience of US Air Force and US Navy pilots and military personnel who command cruise missiles and pilot bombers and those who plan the missions for the pilots and missile commanders. I ask that they refuse what I believe will be unlawful orders to attack Iran."

Brecher and Smith | Will Watada Mistrial Spark an End to the War?
http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/021307F.shtml
Jeremy Brecher and Brendan Smith write: "Watada's reasoning provides a pivot for redirecting America's understanding of what has happened to us and what we must do about it. He challenges us to confront a chain of implications that starts with the truth about the criminality of the Iraq War, moves through the principles of the Constitution and US and international law, and ends with our personal responsibility."

http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/021307LA.shtml
"God, it's like Freddy Krueger, the monster from
'Nightmare on Elm Street.' George W. Bush's proposal to privatize Social Security is b-a-a-a-c-k again, refusing to die. Ever delusional and ever loyal to Wall Street, George W. proposes diverting some payroll taxes to private accounts. Give the man credit for stubborn. He must have slept through the debate in 2005, when his plan was soundly trounced in the court of public opinion and even his own party. OK, George, let's go through this one more time," says Martha Burk.

Alberto Gonzalez's coup d'etat
The Constitution be damned, the attorney general has seized control of U.S. attorney appointments for partisan purposes. By Joe Conason
Under any circumstances, the Bush administration's sudden, explicitly political dismissal and replacement of United States attorneys in judicial districts across the country would be very troubling - both as a violation of American law enforcement traditions and as a triumph of patronage over competence.
But as the story behind these strange decisions unfolds, a familiar theme is emerging. Again, the White House and the Justice Department have been exposed in a secretive attempt to expand executive power for partisan purposes. And again, their scheming is tainted with a nasty whiff of authoritarianism. [snip] Continued: http://snipurl.com/1a3qk

[From Houston on Michael Meiring (Jewish) who was planting bombs in the Phillipines to be blamed on Arabs]:
IS A BOMBING SUSPECT LIVING IN HOUSTON?
By Mark Greenblatt / 11 News | Click here to watch video: http://snipurl.com/1a3r9
For more than two years, Philippine officials say they've wanted to arrest Michael Meiring. The problem? They couldn't find him, but then the 11 News Defenders took a look.
Michael Meiring is a man at the center of a mystery, a fugitive from justice, a man who may be closer than you think. And it began in 2002 in Spring and half a world a way in the Philippines where Davao City was fighting its own war with terrorism and losing.
First there was an explosion at the local airport, then another bomb at the city's wharf. In all, 37 people died and 170 were injured. For Mayor Rodrigo Duterte it was already too much. He asked, "How can this thing happen?" [snip] http://tinyurl.com/yvgkw4

The History of Valentine's Day
Happy Valentine's Day! Valentine's Day is one of my favorite holidays. And before you get the wrong idea, it's not because of the flowers and chocolates! I like Valentine's Day because of its history. You see, the real history behind the holiday is a bit of a mystery. But it is thought to date back to the Romans. At the History Channel's Web site, you can find out more about the history of Valentine's Day. You can also read about some of the greatest romances from history. There's also trivia and a couple of fun games to play. And, of course, you can send an e-card to your family or friends.
