I sent this to my local papers oped and thought it would go good here as well
I am really sick of self-proclaimed Christians using Jesus to promote their own agenda. As in Huffs letter of Feb. 5. Huff begins bad mouthing liberals for creating the welfare state. So what was Jesus’ position on helping the poor? Well he healed them and fed them but didn’t pass judgment on them. Unlike conservative self-proclaimed Christians that support the big business agenda of placing profit over worker well being. In fact Jesus said a rich man could get into heaven as easily as a camel could pass through the eye of a needle. In other words it is wrong for rich to have more than they need when there are many that don’t have enough. Almost sounds like communism.
Huff goes on to rant about sex and abortion. So what was Jesus’ position? Even back in his day women of the oldest profession had ways of birth control and inducing miscarriage (abortion). Jesus washed a prostitutes feet. Sounds more like a symbol of respect than a condemnation. As far as his position on gays, he never mentioned it except to say love and compassion are good. Jesus loved all life even those of military age. Unlike modern conservatives that make a big fuss about abortion but have no problem with the horrors of war for profit. Jesus was crucified for speaking out against a tyrannical government and corrupt church, calling the church a harlot (selling itself for money). So was Jesus a liberal? Well he certainly was not a conservative.
