Israeli officials confirmed that aircraft from Israel “inflicted significant damage” on sites inside Syria believed to contain nuclear materials and equipment supplied by North Korea.
That strike was a practice for war with Iran, according to former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton.
Mr. Bolton, know as a hard nosed “war hawk,” resigned from his position as U.S. representative to the U.N. when Democrat senators said they opposed his nomination by President Bush.
Many insiders believe that Israel did conduct the air strike into Syria as part of a “get tough” policy against Iran’s nuclear program. In the U.N. Security Council, the U.S., U.K. and France favor tougher sanctions against Iran. Russia and China oppose additional sanctions against Iran.
In related news, the French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said on the topic of Iran on Sunday “we have to prepare for the worst, and the worst is war.” He made the statement in an interview broadcast on French television and radio. “We must negotiate right to the end,” with Iran Mr. Koucher said.
Israel announced that it had “reconstituted” its deterrent capability with the strike into Syria. Syria said it would protest the action at the U.N.
