Iranian director defenses the censor

Message cumhur ozkaya

Iranian actress Marziye Vefamehr was punished with flogging. Cause is she doesn't wear turban at film. Iranian director Niki Karimi: "What would you do, if someone made a film which not obeyed to law, in your state?"

Iranian director Niki Karimi said if they would have obeyed to law their pieces weren't censored. I think she doesn't know that censor over climbs the law and rights. Someone may censor films or books unless apply to law, they may comment law for their benefits and there are many rules what can commented arbitrary and there are many samples of.

Law makers write censor rules so uncertainly that rules can commented arbitrary. Some news may threat national security or not, it must announced for national security, too. Some films may be profligate for governments but same films demonstrate naked bodies for being realistic, too, government knows anything about realism or esthetic.

Iranian director and actress Niki Karimi spoke at The Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival (Turkey). Jury member of festival Karimi said she has done 3 films till now and first film (One Night) had been banned in Tehran, she said other films had been released in Iran. Karimi is like concerned with just cinema: Making and playing. She said she focused to cinema and she wasn't care about political issues of cinema in Iran.

She hasn't any obligation for fighting with Iran government, censor commissions and fundamentals. But I think she doesn't know the censor. She said she knew if she played or shot some woman roles that hasn't wear turban, it would be banned by government: "So I   don't play or shoot open women roles. I try to tell something to watchers. If open hair blocked my messengers I don't use open hair in my film. There are rules and we must obey to rules, law. Other Iranian directors prefer to play open woman roles, it is their choice."

Discussion is on responsibility of author in Iran, in an awful state regime. I am a Turk and I have watched stupid comedies since 1985 (I was 9 years old) till 1995 (I was 19 years old). 1980's were like dream for me. But there were rapids, tortures, murders, prisons, terrorism and poorness. I haven't seen these savageries because of those stupid comedies. Any director can't make social-political-realist films or social-political-realist films have been banned, censored. We could watch Yilmaz Guney (Turkish opponent director and actor) films after 1995; they had been made in 1960'-70's. Today we have problems with people who had been tortured; some relatives had been killed and had stayed at prisons. While I was happy with stupid comedies films they were not happy and we didn't understand why did they took up arms and we didn't understand along time, why people fight at eastern Anatolia, today.

These censors were picked up with cinema, literature, theater, photograph, press, science at Turkey. We are much freer now, we can watch many films. A little censor is in use today, too, but I believe it will be removed in a short time.

Iranian actress Marziye Vefamehr was punished with flogging and prison sentence a few days ago. Cause is Vefamehr plays an open woman role. Karimi said that film has been censored before releasing and someone have said film was not obeyed to law: "What would you do, if someone made a film which not obeyed to law, in Turkey. I don't this sample as a censor. We must to obey to laws. If we don't we can't tell our opinions and messages because it is not allowed by government."

If director Karimi goes on to making film with this approach, her films will not watched about 10-20 years later, in Iran or Turkey or others. Because, I hope and I think Iran will not be an "Islam republic' about 10-20 years later. A journalist from Holland said to Karimi, artists must have been more creative at Iran.

She must thing freely and she must see tomorrows of Iran. Any artist who believes the censor may not think freely.
