Two indicted felons are still running the Pleasantville Board of Education, despite last weeks criminal complaints by US Attorney Christopher Christie.
Jason Pressley, the BOE President, and Rafael Velez, a current BOE member, were arrested based on criminal complaints of bribery and corruption charges after a FBI sting investigation. The high risk, low attainment school district, that falls below many of the State of NJ's educational measurements, receives about $65 million of taxpayer funding.
At last night's BOE meeting, the first in Pleasantville since the complaints were released, and Pressley and Velez were arrested, Mr. Pressley ruled that the board could not vote to remove Velez nor himself.
Members of the public and parents of students spoke out against the two defiant belligerents. Nevertheless when fellow BOE members moved to remove them, Pressley gaveled the meeting closed despite the motion being seconded. The BOE then moved into Executive Session from which the public is barred.
